The sap secreted by the trees contains flavonoids, this is mixed with the bees’ saliva, and other things, to obtain Propolis.
Generally, flavonoids are known as a substance that protect plants shoots. They prevent animals from eating the buds and leaves, moderate the effect of ultraviolet rays, and so on.
“Propolis”is one of the defences bees use to protect themselves from foreign enemies.
Bees use flavonoid-rich propolis to seal gaps and small holes in the hive, to reinforce the joints between the frame and ceiling, and to narrow the entrance to the hive.
In addition, covering the inside of the hive in propolis provides a defence against foreign enemy invasion, and keeps the inside of the hive clean, even though the hive should be a suitable environment for bacterial growth.
Bees use propolis as one of the ways
to comprehensively defend themselves from foreign enemies.
Origin of the word; Propolis
The word “propolis” comes from the Greek word “pro”, which means before or defense and “polis” which means city or community. Therefore, meaning “defended city”.
